Description of the exam

The civic exam is administered in accordance with the guidelines of the French Ministry of the Interior, as part of the new rules governing integration and eligibility for residency in France.

📅 Starting January 1, 2026, it is mandatory for :

  • Apply for a multi-year residence permit
  • Apply for a residence permit
  • Apply for French nationality

Validity: unlimited

ℹ️ Not required for renewal applications

💶 Price: €75 (not eligible for CPF funding)

Who can take the exam?

Any person residing in France who is applying for:

  • A first-time application for or renewal of a multi-year residence permit
  • An initial application for a resident card
  • An application for naturalization

⚠️ Accommodations (extra time, exemptions) may be available depending on your situation

Exam procedure

🖥️ 100% digital exam (on a computer)

⏱️ Duration: 45 minutes

40 questions (multiple choice)

📈 Level: depending on the exam chosen (residence permit, permanent resident card, or naturalization)

Passing score: 32 correct answers (80%)

📊 Results: available within 12 hours in your candidate account

Two-step registration:

1. Online pre-registration on France Education International

Create your account by entering your personal details and selecting the exam you wish to take.

⚠️ Keep your login credentials for your applicant account on France Education International

2. Register for the exam in person or using our online form

Fill in your information, select a date, and pay for the exam to confirm your registration

📄 Required documents: Valid passport, residence permit, or driver’s license

Minimum waiting period: 24 hours between exam registrations

On the day of the exam
