Try oysters at the markets in Bordeaux

Culinary-wise, summer in Bordeaux often means enjoying seafood. As a famous local specialty, enjoying oysters for lunch is sure to put you in a summery mood. The famous Marché des Capucins will win you over with its bustling energy and diverse range of flavors. Open every morning except Monday, come to this market to taste some oysters from local oyster farmers in the Southwest.

Another popular summer market in Bordeaux is the Marché des Chartrons, located along the quays. Find it every Sunday from 7 AM to 1 PM. You can also enjoy oysters from the Arcachon Bay paired with a glass of white wine, with a view of the Garonne River.

Bordeaux, its lakes, and the ocean

Just an hour from Bordeaux, head to the Atlantic coast for a refreshing dip in the ocean! You’ll find quiet beaches around the Arcachon Bay, as well as livelier ones like those in Biscarosse or Le Porge, which are perfect for surfers. From intense water sports to bustling spots or quiet escapes, every beach has its own character and you’re bound to find your perfect match.

Arcachon (photo 1) is a popular tourist destination with many attractions. For example, you can climb to the top of the impressive Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe. Next, you can enjoy seafood typical of the Bay Area in the colorful fishermen’s huts. The afternoon can then continue at a more leisurely pace at the beach, with a swim and some relaxation in the sun. Finally, explore the charming town of Arcachon, with its traditional houses and small shops.

However, you don’t need to leave Bordeaux to go to the beach! In fact, Bordeaux Lac (photo 2) is a great option for those who want to swim and sunbathe in Bordeaux during the summer without leaving the city. Open throughout the summer, the Lac Beach offers a wide range of activities including kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding. There’s also Bègles Beach, which has picnic areas—perfect for families looking to spend the day there.

Terraces and guinguettes for your evenings in Bordeaux

Summer in Bordeaux means lively evenings spent on terraces and at guinguettes. The mild weather of summer will tempt you to stop by these lively spots to wind down the day. Guinguettes, a typically French concept, combine an open-air bar and restaurant with a place to dance. For example, on the right bank, you’ll find La Guinguette chez Alriq (photo 1), a warm and welcoming spot. It’s a great place to share a drink or a simple meal, and to enjoy outdoor live music from both local and international performers.

Every summer in Bordeaux, the Alliance Française invites you to enjoy a friendly atmosphere at French Apéros held at the guinguette. The perfect opportunity to meet all the other international students from the school and get a taste of French culture over a refreshing drink!
