The French language week

On March 20th every year, International Francophone Day is celebrated around the world. It was back in 1970 on March 20th that the treaty to create the Agence de coopération culturelle, later to become the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), was signed at Niamey in Niger.

In commemoration of the event of March 20th, French Language and Francophonie Week has become a major event for language lovers both in France and abroad. The 220 million francophones on five continents celebrate the diversity of the French-speaking world through word contests, performances, film festivals, literary encounters, gastronomy events and art exhibitions among others.

In Bordeaux, the Alliance Française joins the festivities by participating in the "Dis-moi dix mots" event. This initiative to raise awareness of the French language invites participants to engage in play and express themselves using literary or artistic forms. Every year, a topic is chosen aimed at transmitting a message about the French language (such as the language as a social link, the language’s capacity to express personal ideas, or the incorporation of verbal inventions).  Every Francophone partner chooses 10 words to depict the topic: France, Belgium, Quebec, Switzerland and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (which represents 80 member states and governments).

francophonie AFBA 2015Every year, the Alliance Française Bordeaux Aquitaine organizes a writing contest involving the 10 selected words, in partnership with the Education Authorities. Schoolchildren and students from the Alliance Française are invited to use these words to express their personal world viewpoints. The participants have to call on their creativity (through poems, literary texts and humorous texts for example). Photography contests, exhibitions, award ceremonies are held alongside this, making the event into a great success!
